What is Bamboo?
Bamboos are a diverse group of grasses belonging to the subfamily Bambusoidea of the grass family Poaceae. Most noticeable in the mid summer they are an evergreen perennial flowering plant that come in many sizes depending on the type of bamboo with certain species of Giant Bamboo able to reach a height up to 30 metres.
Bamboo is quite a desirable plant to have, usually used as a screen to obscure eyesores like septic tanks, fuel tanks and are often cultivated into boundary markers and hedgerows. They can be a welcome and pleasant addition to your garden .
It is also extremely versatile and has many uses, from furniture to flooring and items of clothing to towels.
So, What’s The Problem?
The problem in garden and landscape settings is that some species of bamboo can be extremely quick growing and can spread rapidly, with some species having been documented to grow up to 90cm vertically per day and 6 metres horizontally a year.
Running Bamboo
Running bamboo spreads from an underground rhizome which can grow in any direction and up to as much as six metres in length horizontally a year. New bamboo shoots will then grow through the surface at intervals along the length of that rhizome to form the bamboo culms (poles). Running bamboo then send off further rhizomes, again spreading up to 6 metres in any direction beyond the original plant – producing the running bamboo grove. It is this type of bamboo that is the most common source of neighbour disputes where encroachment from one property to adjoining properties has occurred.
Clumping Bamboo
This type of bamboo is generally considered the tamer and easier to manage however can also become a problem if left unchecked. It does not tend to spread as quickly and aggressively as its running cousin. These types of Bamboo do not spread in the same way. They produce short, individual rhizomes that grow out of the soil and up into individual culms (bamboo poles), forming a round ‘clump’ of culms. These bamboo shoots are very shallow and near the surface, and can only produce one culm per rhizome, not like a running bamboo that spreads everywhere. Clumping bamboo cannot physically run and will generally remain in the clump where you plant the original bamboo.
Bamboo Removal Methods
There are different methods for removing bamboo depending on the size and severity of the spread as well as the environmental conditions specific to the area.
These include :
Cutting and Pruning
Digging Out/Excavation
Root barrier installation
Chemical Control
Regular Monitoring
All of the methods above rely on regular monitoring from the property/landowner, sometimes for as much as 2 years.
Bamboo is hardy and resilient and can resprout easily from a few small pieces of rhizome. Less so with the tamer “clumping” variety of bamboo, but it is still important to keep an eye and regularly monitor the treated area for any signs of plants regrowing as these should be immediately removed.
