Bamboo
It’s a little known fact that bamboo is actually a member of the grass family believed to have originated in Asia but now found in tropical and subtropical climates around the world.
It was introduced to the UK in the 1800’s originally as an ornamental tropical plant kept in hot houses but later varieties soon followed more suitable to temperate climates with over 1400 different varieties of bamboo now documented.
An incredibly sturdy and robust plant it can grow extremely quickly and has even been called the fastest growing plant on earth.
Bamboo Issues
Bamboo has become incredibly popular in the UK and worldwide because of it’s good looking and resilient nature but it is also incredibly aggressive and quick spreading.
It can quickly grow beyond it’s boundaries and can find it’s way into neighbouring properties if not properly maintained and monitored and can spread and push up through tarmac and effect driveways, patios and paving stones.
Of the 1,400 different varieties of bamboo, they can broadly be divided into two categories, Clumping and Running.
Clumping bamboo generally has shorter roots ( rhizomes ) and forms in localised clumps close to the original plant. This variety is not generally aggressive and invasive compared to running bamboo.
Running bamboo has strong and aggressive roots that “run” and quickly spread out far from the original plant. It is generally this type of bamboo that causes issues for surrounding properties.
Bamboo Removal
Bamboo treatment and removal methods include:
Excavation – manual and mechanical removal depending on the size of the spread.
Physical / Rhizome Barriers – physical barriers placed around the root structure to keep the rhizomes within their boundaries.
Herbicide Treatments – Chemical treatments can be applied ensuring no spill over to surrounding plants.
