Bamboo
Bamboo has a storied history as one of the most useful and versatile plants on earth. Actually a member of the grass family there is documented bamboo usage in China 7,000 years ago where it was used for all kinds of things including clothing, paper and household items.
Known as “the fastest growing plant in the world” bamboo can quickly populate all kinds of gardens and landscapes which has made it extremely popular in the UK since it’s introduction as a graceful ornamental plant in the late 18th century.
Bamboo is incredibly varied with over 1400 documented varieties, many with different characteristics so it is always important to identify the variety of bamboo you may be experiencing issues with as the first step in any treatment.
Problems with Bamboo
Although a graceful plant that looks great and is a good addition to any garden or landscape, if not kept under control properly bamboo can quickly spread beyond it’s boundaries and create problems.
It’s powerful rhizome network ( root structure ) is quick spreading and extremely aggressive although this does depend on the variety of bamboo.
It can cause problems for property owners as it can spread quickly and shoots can push up through concrete, causing damage to driveways, patios and paving stones and encroaching onto neighbouring properties.
It can also create issues for local eco systems as it can can outcompete native plants.
Despite there being over 1,400 varieties bamboos can generally be divided into two main categories Clumping and Running which is important because one of these categories is generally the much more invasive one.
Clumping bamboos are on the whole less problematic as they have a short root structure that generally only extends out a few inches per year forming discrete “clumps.”
Running bamboos are generally more troublesome as they have quick spreading and aggressive horizontal roots that can “run” far from the original root structure and invade surrounding areas.
Again, it is important to remember that the bamboo plant ( grass ) family is incredibly diverse so it is always the most important initial step to correctly identify the type and variety of bamboo you have present.
Bamboo Treatment & Removal
Like most invasive weeds the correct treatment for bamboo can vary depending on the variety of bamboo and nature and spread of the infestation.
Treatment and Removal methods include :
Manual Removal – Manual digging up of the bamboo and it’s roots.
Mechanical Excavation – Generally for larger bamboo infestations and more common on commercial projects.
Physical Rhizome Barrier Installation – Placed around the root structure of the bamboo to prevent spreading beyond those boundaries.
Herbicides – Chemical spraying and treating of the infected area. This can be an ongoing treatment to ensure no re-growth.
Ongoing Observation
It is very important to monitor the area of the infestation moving forward. Although it may seem as though the problem has been eradicated, bamboo is incredibly sturdy and re-growth can occur if even the tiniest fragment of rhizome has been left behind.
