An incredibly fast growing plant it can quickly populate a garden or landscape and can grow to towering heights making it an elegant and hardy addition to gardens that can provide great privacy.

The bamboo plant family is quite varied in growth rates and the aggressive nature of it’s spread so it is important to clarify which type of bamboo it is before beginning any treatment.

Bamboo Problems

Bamboo is often planted because of it’s hardy and sturdy nature but the resilient roots of certain types of bamboo, known as rhizomes, can also become problematic due to their quick spreading and incredibly invasive nature.

Their are two main types of bamboo, running and clumping bamboo and it is generally the running bamboo that spreads through it’s extensive root network and can invade neighbouring properties, cause structural damage and out compete and overwhelm native plant species and eco-systems.

Clumping bamboos have a much shorter root structure and tend to form discrete clumps which are not as invasive and fast spreading as running bamboos, although clumping bamboos can also spread if not continually monitored.

Again the bamboo family can be quite diverse with over 1,000 different varieties so identifying the exact type of bamboo you have present is crucial to correct treatment and removal.

Like a lot of invasive weeds, treatments to remove bamboo can vary by the size and spread of the infestation with a few different options available.

Mechanical Excavation – again with excavation it is important that the whole underground root network is identified and excavated.

Installation of Physical Barrier – rhizome barriers are inserted around the infestation to prevent further spread.

Chemical Treatments – careful application of herbicides can be used to eradicate the rhizomes and ensure re-growth does not occur.

Ongoing Monitoring

It is important to note that successful bamboo removal does not end with the initial treatment and removal. On going monitoring of the infested area is vital to prevent any re-infestation and ensure no re-growth.

The area must be continually checked moving forward and monitored for any signs of the re-emergence of bamboo shoots as the quicker these can be identified and removed then the greater the chance for long term success.
