Bamboo in the UK
There are reports of bamboo first being introduced to the UK in the late 18th century and it has since become extremely popular as a good looking addition to any landscape or domestic garden known for it’s ability to grow and populate the area extremely quickly.
An incredibly resilient plant it can quickly grow to astonishing heights with some bamboo varieties being recorded as growing up to 1.5 inches per hour.
Although actually a grass in the family Poaceae some bamboos can grow so large that they resemble trees with bamboo forests being common in certain areas around the world.
There are over 1,400 different varieties of bamboo currently documented with varied spread and growth rates so it is extremely important to clarify the type and variety of bamboo that is present before any treatment and removal process begins.
What Are The Problems With Bamboo ?
What can originally make bamboo seem so appealing can also become the biggest problem after planting it.
Namely it’s quick growing and sturdy nature.
The resilient and quick spreading root structure in certain varieties of bamboo can be incredibly aggressive and invasive to the surrounding area and without proper control in place, bamboo can quickly overwhelm it’s surroundings.
It’s root or rhizome network in certain varieties spreads similar to other invasive weeds such as Japanese Knotweed and control and monitoring is crucial.
There are generally two main types that bamboo can be divided into with one generally being much more problematic than the other.
Clumping Bamboo is generally considered the tamer and easier to handle bamboo as it has a root mass like many normal ornamental grasses. They have a very short root structure which generally only expand a few inches per year, forming localised and easily identifiable clumps.
Running Bamboo can be incredibly invasive due to their long, horizontal and fast spreading rhizomes ( roots ). Unlike clumping bamboos these roots can spread far from the parent plant and infiltrate surrounding areas.
Again the bamboo family is very diverse with well over 1,000 varieties so proper identification of the variety of bamboo is an important first step.
Bamboo Removal Methods
Like most invasive weed treatments, bamboo removal methods will vary depending on the type and scope of the infected area.
Each growth can have unique characteristics and the appropriate treatment can vary depending on the type of bamboo present and the proximity to surrounding areas.
The first step should always be a free, no obligation survey to identify the type of bamboo and spread.
Then there are different treatment and removal methods depending on the exact nature of the problem.
These can include :
Manual Removal – Initial mowing and cutting of the bamboo by hand, taking care to remove all of the root structure.
Mechanical Excavation – If the problem area is larger and too big to be done by hand mechanical excavation can be employed.
Rhizome Barrier Installation – Physical barriers are inserted vertically into the ground to ensure the root structure cannot spread beyond those boundaries.
Chemical Treatments / Herbicides – Safely applying a herbicide to the bamboo and re-application over 2-3 years.
Ongoing Monitoring Of The Area
With any bamboo removal method it is vital that all of the root structure is removed as re-growth can quickly occur from even the smallest fragment of rhizome that is left behind.
Ongoing surveillance of the area is vitally important to ensure no re-growth takes places and that prompt action is taken should any new shoots become visible.
