What Is Bamboo ?
Bamboo is actually a tall tree like grass originally from Asia, mainly from China and India with records dating back of it’s use over 7,000 years ago.
It was introduced to the UK and Europe in the late 18th / early 19th century with the tropical varieties of the plant proving popular but originally only suitable to be kept in hothouses.
The more temperate varieties of bamboo became popular as hardy and good looking ornamental plants suitable for all kinds of garden and landscape settings.
An extremely quick growing plant, it has even been called the fastest growing plant in the world with certain species documented at growing nearly 3 ft per day.
The bamboo family is incredibly diverse with over 1400 documented varieties, many with different characteristics, so it is very important to first identify the type of bamboo you may have before beginning any treatment or removal program.
What Are The Issues ?
People love bamboo because it grows quickly, looks good and even offers privacy if planted as a screen, but it also can create problems due to it’s extremely invasive and hardy nature.
It can cause issues as it can actually break through tarmac, spreading and pushing it’s way up through driveways, patios and paving stones. It can also spread and invade neighbouring properties the correct physical boundaries are not in place.
There are two distinct types of bamboo, Clumping and Running.
Clumping bamboo is known as Sympodial. It generally has shorter roots ( rhizomes ) that spread out gradually, but stay closer to the original plants, forming in localised clumps.
Running bamboo is Monopodial. It has roots that extend out horizontally and “run” and it is this tendency to spread quickly and aggressively that means that the “running” type of bamboo is more often than not the most problematic.
Bamboo Removal Treatments & Methods
Depending on the size and severity of the infestation some of the most common bamboo removal treatments are :
Excavation – This can be done manually for smaller infestations and even mechanically for larger scale spreads. The key point is to ensure that all of the root structure is eradicated as even the smallest of fragments left behind can start re-growth.
Physical / Rhizome Barriers – A physical barrier can be placed underground to keep the roots from spreading beyond the protected area.
Chemical Treatments – There are many Herbicides proven to control and remove bamboo, with treatments containing Glyphosate proving particularly popular.
