Bamboo
Bamboo is native to Asia, particularly India and China with reports of it being cultivated over 5,000 years ago.
First introduced to the UK in the late 18th / early 19th century originally as a hothouse “tropical” plant it’s many varieties have now become popular throughout the British Isles as a sturdy, pleasant looking plant with the ability to grow extremely quickly.
Now numbering nearly 1,500 in the types of varieties in the family, bamboo is extremely diverse so it is always important to identify the type of bamboo you have present before starting any treatment or removal programme.
Problems With Bamboo
The main problem that people experience with bamboo is it’s ability to quickly and invasively spread to surrounding areas and properties.
It can quickly outcompete and suffocate local plant varieties and can create problems with neighbours, with legal action even having to be taken at times if the bamboo on your property is not kept under control.
It’s incredibly tough root structure or rhizome network can spread aggressively and shoots can push up and appear through concrete foundations, drives, patios on your or neighbouring properties.
There are two main types of bamboo with one generally more troublesome than the other :
Clumping Bamboo is generally less problematic and invasive with easily visible clumps forming close to the plant.
Running Bamboo is the more troublesome due to it’s strong and fast spreading “running” roots. Generally running bamboo is the type to infiltrate and overwhelm surrounding areas and cause you issues.
Bamboo Removal
Similar to all invasive weed treatment and removal plans, methods for getting rid of bamboo vary depending on the size and spread of the infestation.
The first step should always be to identify the type of bamboo present before deciding on any kind of treatment programme.
Then removal methods can include :
Manual or Mechanical Removal – Digging out the infested area and root structure with mechanical excavation used for bigger infestations.
Physical Barrier – Rhizome barriers are installed vertically around the plant to ensure the root structure does not encroach and spread to surrounding areas or properties.
Herbicides / Chemicals – Bamboo can be treated chemically with herbicide, making sure to not treat any surrounding plants.
Ongoing Monitoring
With any bamboo treatment or removal it is of extreme importance to constantly monitor the infected area for any signs of regrowth once the initial bamboo removal has occured.
New shoots can quickly sprout back up if even tiniest fragment of rhizome has been left behind in the soil.
