Bamboo in the UK
First imported to London’s Kew Gardens from Asia in the 1800’s as part of a wider spread period of collection of exotic plant species bamboo quickly gained popularity in the UK due to it’s good looks, sturdiness and ability to quickly populate and offer privacy to a garden or landscaped setting.
With now over 1600 documented varieties with many able to adapt and thrive in the cooler British climate, bamboo has firmly established itself on these shores to the point where it is now being considered a problem in certain settings.
Bamboo Issues
Having been labelled “the fastest growing plant in the world” with some species able to grow over 80cm in a single day and create actual forests, it is this ability to grow and spread quickly that can also create problems with bamboo.
It has incredibly strong and aggressively spreading roots that can spread far from the parent plant, invading neighbouring properties, where it can punch up through most things in it’s path, exploiting any weaknesses in stones, drives, even the foundations of a house with all the potential for legal issues that would entail.
It can also survive and thrive in lower quality soils and outcompete native species creating problems for local eco-systems.
With now over 1600 different documented varieties of bamboo these still generally fall into two categories :
Clumping Bamboo – Form in “clumps” close to the host plant and do not generally spread and cause problems.
Running Bamboo – The more problematic as they can “run” far from the parent plant and penetrate and cause damage to surrounding areas and properties.
Bamboo Treatment & Removal Methods
Treatment and removal methods include :
Manual Removal – The plant and roots can be manually removed by hand.
Mechanical Excavation – Often used for larger infestations on commercial and industrial sites.
Physical Bamboo Barriers – Vertical rhizome barriers can be placed around the roots to keep them within their boundaries.
Chemical / Herbicide Treatments – Can be used on most varieties of bamboo as part of a course of treatment.
Ongoing Monitoring
Further observation and monitoring is crucial to ensure no re-growth as bamboo can re-form if even the slightest fragment of rhizome is left in the ground.
