UK Bamboo
Bamboo was first introduced to the UK in the 1800’s from Eastern Asia and gained popularity as a resilient and fast growing plant that can provide an excellent screen and provide privacy from surrounding properties.
Actually a member of the grass family rather than a tree, bamboo now numbers over 1600 documented species with some varieties among the fastest growing species in the world and able to grow into actual forests, such as giant bamboo.
An incredibly diverse, handy and durable species, bamboo is used in construction, clothing, food and paper among it’s many uses.
Problems With Bamboo
Problems can arise with bamboo due to it’s highly aggressive and quick spreading nature.
It’s invasive and powerful rhizomes ( roots ) can spread far from the plant into surrounding properties and areas causing disputes and possible legal issues with neighbours as it can penetrate and push up through any weakness in nearby structures such as drives, walls, patios, even buildings.
Although there are now over 1600 documented varieties of bamboo the way they spread can be broadly sub categorised into two main types :
Running Bamboo : Often the destructive and problematic variety as it’s roots can run aggressively into surrounding areas and properties.
Clumping Bamboo : Generally not as problematic as it’s roots tend to stay close to the host plant, visible in surrounding clumps.
Bamboo Removal
Common methods for treating and removing bamboo include:
Physical Removal -The bamboo can be removed by hand or with gardening tools.
Mechanical Excavation – For larger and commercial infestations.
Rhizome Barriers – Physical barriers can be placed into the ground surrounding the roots to prevent spread.
Chemical Treatments / Herbicides – Being careful not to affect surrounding flora and fauna.
