Bamboo

A plant actually native to Southeast Asia and South America bamboo was first introduced to the UK as an elegant ornamental plant.

It quickly gained popularity due to it’s hardy and robust nature and the fact that it’s numerous varieties meant that there was a type of bamboo ideal for any size of garden or landscape.

An incredibly quick growing plant, bamboo has been know to grow up to 2.91 feet per day, which is 1.5 inches per hour ( according to the Guinness Book of World Records ) so it is ideal for quickly populating a garden and provides great privacy.

The bamboo plant family is extremely broad with over 1,000 species and these have extremely varied growth rates depending on the type so it is very important to clarify what type of bamboo you may have present before starting any treatment or removal.

Problems with Bamboo

Although an elegant and good looking plant that can generally be a good addition to all kinds of garden and plant settings bamboo can also be extremely aggressive and fast spreading.

The shoots can pop up anywhere in the garden, can spread into neighbouring properties and even break through tarmac, growing beneath patios and paving slabs.

It grows fast and can thrive in poor soils making it extremely resilient. This can cause problems to native flora and fauna and eco systems as it can often outcompete surrounding plants.

It’s sturdy roots, known as rhizomes, can spread quickly and form a strong network similar to Japanese Knotweed which make it vital to ensure that  the entire root and rhizome mass is identified and removed as thoroughly as possible as even the tiniest fragment left behind can restart the growing process.

There are generally two main types of bamboo, Clumping – which as the name suggests is characterised by the bamboo staying tightly clumped together , and Running bamboo which is the type with the long underground rhizome network that has the tendency to spread quickly.

Again, the bamboo plant family is very diverse so the first step in any treatment or removal is identifying the type of bamboo that is present.

Removing The Bamboo 

Like most types of invasive weed treatments , bamboo removal methods can vary by the nature and size of the spread of the infestation with a few different treatment options available.

These can include :

Manual Removal – this can be very effective but is also quite labor intensive as it is important to identify the whole rhizome network that may often spread far from the visible plants. It is important to not leave even the smallest fragment of rhizome behind.

Mechanical Excavation – for larger infestation excavation may be appropriate, again ensuring that the entire underground root network is identified and removed.

Installation of Physical Barrier – rhizome barriers can stop bamboo roots from spreading and contain the rhizome network within the barrier boundaries.

Herbicides – chemical treatments and herbicides can be used to control bamboo with glyphosate being possibly the most popular.

Further Monitoring

Once the bamboo has been successfully removed it is important to monitor the treated area for any signs that rhizome has been left behind and the presence of new shoots and new growth. The sooner these can be identified and removed the better.
