Japanese Knotweed
Japanese Knotweed was first introduced to the UK by the botanist Philipp Franz Von Siebold in 1850 where it was brought to London’s Kew Gardens as an ornamental garden plant for cultivation and commercial sale.
However as it increased in popularity it began to spread beyond it’s initial boundaries as extra roots were thrown over garden fences where it began to take root and spread in the wild to the point it has now had a significant environmental impact.
Listed in Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is now an offence to plant or cause this species to grow in the wild although significantly it is not illegal to have knotweed on your land or property, although you are responsible for ensuring it does not spread into surrounding areas and properties.
With its hardy and resilient nature Japanese Knotweed can thrive in most conditions, often found growing on abandoned or unattended land as well as railways lines, watercourses and public footpaths.
Its strong and complex rhizome network means its roots can spread far from the original plant causing significant damage to walls, patios, concrete structures, even foundations of neighbouring houses, along with all the possible legal implications that entails.
It can also out-compete native species for light and nutrients and imbalance local environments.
