Problems with Japanese Knotweed
Japanese Knotweed was first brought from Japan to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London in 1850 by Philipp Von Siebold, a German botanist and physician as an ornamental garden plant to be used for cultivation and sale in Great Britain.
It’s incredibly robust and quick growing nature become popular throughout the UK as it was a good looking ornamental that could easily populate a garden or landscape quickly.
Problems began to arise as it started to gradually escape it’s boundaries, both naturally due to its fast and aggressive spreading rhizome network ( roots ) and due to human activities, both advertently and inadvertently and it became popular alongside wastelands, railways and waterways as the disturbed soil in these areas provides the ideal conditions for it to take root and then spread into surrounding areas.
To the point where the spread of Japanese Knotweed has become such an environmental issue that it is listed in Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and is subject to Section 14 of this Act. Meaning it is an offence to plant or cause this species to grow in the wild, although you are still allowed to have it on your properly providing you ensure no spread to surrounding areas or properties where it can push up through patios, drives, walls and foundations with all the ensuing legal issues this can bring with it.
Knotweed can also only be disposed of at specially licensed facilities so professional advice is always of vital importance before beginning any treatment, management and removal plan.
