Japanese Knotweed in the UK
Japanese Knotweed ( Fallopia Japonica ) was first introduced to the UK in the mid 1800’s from East Asia. Native to both Japan, China and Korea it was brought here by botanists as a sturdy ornamental plant that quickly became popular throughout the UK and Europe.
It’s resilient and sturdy rhizome network ( root structure ) can spread quickly and take over a garden or surrounding area due to it’s ability to outcompete local plant species.
It can exploit any weaknesses in concrete structures such as walls, drives, patios even outbuildings and foundations and can become a legal issue if it spreads to surrounding properties.
Japanese Knotweed is listed in Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 meaning it is an offense to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild.
It also can only be disposed of at specialist licensed facilities so it is always important to have knotweed removed by an accredited professional.
