Himalayan Balsam History and Identification.
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) was first imported to Great Britain by the Victorians in the early nineteenth century from the Himalayas as a good looking garden plant.
A relative of the Busy Lizzie, it quickly spread to riverbanks and wastelands due to it’s ability to out compete native plant species and it’s ability to thrive in very low light levels.
It has now become such a problem to local bio-diversity and eco systems that it is now illegal to sell it or cause it to spread in the environment.
Easily identifiable by it’s purplish pink and white helmet shaped flowers ( Hence one of it’s nicknames Policemans Helmet ) reddish green stems and explosive, densely packed seed pods it is an annual plant that dies back over the winter, often contributing to river erosion.
Spread Of Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam plants can grow up to 3 metres tall and with it’s densely packed and highly explosive seed pods capable of shooting up to 800 seeds 7 metres away from the plant it is easy to see how it is such a prolific spreader.
Himalayan Balsam also is often found on riverbanks so the seeds are scattered downstream by the current where they populate riverbank areas further downstream.

As with many invasive species there are different removal methods depending on the size and scope of the infestation.
