    Himalayan Balsam

As it’s name would imply Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) originates from the Western Himalayas and was first introduced to these shores in the 1830’s as a garden plant.

Due to it’s quick and aggressive spread it quickly escaped it’s initial surroundings to become widely naturalised particularly along riverbanks and wet habitats.

Generally identified by it’s distinctive purple, pink and white helmet shaped flowers which have given it one of it’s nicknames “Policemans Helmet” as well as “Kiss Me On The Mountain” as a nod to it’s Himalayan heritage it can grow up to 3 metres tall and is actually the UK’s largest annual plant, usually flowering between June and October.

It can grown in a wild variety of habitats that other plants cannot survive in and often shades out native species causing problems for local eco-systems.

    Spread of Himalayan Balsam

Himalayan Balsam has spread far and wide due mainly to it’s densely packed seed pods that explode open when ripe and can shoot seeds up to 7 metres away from the host plant.

With each plant able to produce approximately 800 seeds it often scatters these seeds into surrounding rivers and waterways which then get washed downstream by the current creating further infestations.

With it’s ability to thrive in very low light levels and outcompete local species it has now become such an invasive problem that it is now illegal to plant Himalayan Balsam or release it into the environment.

Himalayan Balsam Treatment & Removal Methods

As with any invasive weed removal, methods for treating Himalayan Balsam can vary depending on the size and nature of the infestation and spread.

Removal methods for Himalayan Balsam include :

Mowing or Strimming the plant to remove the visible above-ground plant.

Removal of the roots ensuring no root structure is left behind.

Chemically treating the infected area with Herbicide.
