    About Himalayan Balsam

Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) was first introduced to these shores in the 1800’s as a desirable ornamental plant.

A native of the Western Himalayas and a relative of the Busy Lizzie it quickly spread into the wild due to it’s explosive ability to scatter its seeds and has now become a significant problem for local natural environments, particularly along riverbanks and wet woodlands where you will often see it in dense groupings.

It’s ability to spread rapidly and it’s tall growth of up to 3 metres mean it can shade out native plant species and out compete them due to it’s ability to survive in very low light levels.

This has become such an issue that it is now illegal to plant Himalayan Balsam, transport it or cause it to spread, both in the UK and the EU.

Identifiable by it’s good looking, purple / pink and white helmet shaped flowers and prominent seed pods it is an annual plant that regenerates each year.

    Himalayan Balsam Spread

As mentioned before Himalayan Balsam’s powerfully exploding seed pods are the main reason it is such an aggressive spreader.

Each plant is capable of producing approximately 800 seeds, with these densely packed pods capable of shooting the seeds up to 7 metres away from the host plant.

As Himalayan Balsam regularly populates riverbanks and wet woodland areas, the pods often explode the seeds into the adjacent waterway where they are carried further downstream where they wash up and take root, creating further densely packed clusters of the plant.

    Removing Himalayan Balsam

One thing you may have noticed is crowds of people gathering along riverbanks for voluntary “Balsam Bashing” parties, helping to eradicate the plant from the local environment. These can be organised by environmental and community groups as well as charities.

Alongside the balsam bashing there are a number of other more traditional methods for removing the plant.

    These can include :

Removing by hand – Simply pulling up the plant by hand from it’s roots. Ensuring to remove all the root structure if possible.

Cutting & Strimming – The plant can be cut down and removed using tools such as trowels and shovels. It can also be strimmed above the surface.

Herbicides Treatments – Chemical treatments can be used on Himalayan Balsam as with other invasive weeds.
