Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) was first introduced to the British Isles in 1839 and is a relative of the Busy Lizzie species of plant.
First appearing at Kew Gardens and the first records of naturalisation being in 1955 it is considered an invasive, non-native species that is now illegal to cause to spread in the wild.
It flourishes in damp, low light conditions and is often found alongside riverbanks, wetlands and waste ground.
A good looking plant, it is easily identifiable by it’s pinkish purple flowers shaped in the shape of a helmet, densely packed seedpods and tall reddish green stems that can grow up to 3 metres tall.
Spread of Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan grows rapidly and spreads quickly and has started to invade gardens on a much more frequent basis.
It’s explosive seed pods can scatter seeds over 7 metres away from the plant and each plant can produce up to 800 seeds. As it is often found along riverbanks the seeds get washed downstream where new infestations spring up.
It is prevalent throughout Europe and North America where it has been banned in many countries with the main problem being it’s ability to survive at very low light levels and outcompete native plant varieties also contributing to river erosion as it dies back over the winter leaving the infested area bare.
Control & Removal
Unlike some other invasive species Himalayan Balsam has a shallow root structure so removing it can be easier than Japanese Knotweed for example.

Manual Removal Of The Plant – Removing the plants by hand or using a gardening tool.
