Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a non native and invasive species of plant that was originally believed to have been imported from the Western Himalayas in the 1800’s.
Identifiable by it’s purple / pink helmet shaped flowers and with stems up to two metres in height it can often be found in large clumps on riverbanks and waste and woodland areas.
Again like Japanese Knotweed it is a very aggressive and quick spreading plant and can quickly penetrate surrounding areas including gardens, where it can quickly out compete other, more desirable plants.
Himalayan Balsam Control
As it has continued to spread throughout the UK Himalayan Balsam has become more of an issue, so much so that it is now illegal to plant or cause Himalayan Balsam to grow in the wild, or intentionally release the seeds into the environment and it can also only be transported by a registered waste carrier to suitably authorised sites.
It is an incredible fast and aggressive spreader with each stem able to produce up to 800 seeds from its pods which can shoot it’s seeds up to seven metres away when ripe.
As Himalayan Balsam is often found on riverbanks these seeds are often shot out into the river which carries them downstream, where they take root and establish themselves on other riverbank areas.
Removing Himalayan Balsam
As with all invasive weeds there are a number of different options for removing Himalayan Balsam depending on the size and spread of the infected area.
These can include :
Removing Manually – Pulling up or digging out Himalayan Balsam by the hands can be effective due to it’s shallow root system. This is best done before they flower.
Cutting & Strimming – It is important to cut as close to the ground as possible.
Chemical Treatment – Targeted weedkillers can be used in a controlled environment.
