Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a large annual species of plant first introduced to the UK as a good looking ornamental garden plant in the 1800’s.
Now considered a problematic weed it is commonly found throughout Europe and is easily identifiable by it’s distinct looking purple / pink flowers often helmet shaped.
It’s fast growing green and red stems can grow up to two metres tall and it is often found along watercourses in densely formed clumps as well as infecting wooded areas, domestic gardens and building sites.
Himalayan Balsam Control And Spread
Himalayan Balsam has become such an issue throughout Europe that it is now illegal in the EU for it to be grown or imported.
It is a very fast and aggressive spreader as each plant can produce up to 800 seeds that can then be scattered up to seven metres away from the host plant from densely packed and explosive seed pods.
These can then be washed downstream where further concentrations form, contributing to riverbank erosion as the plant dies back over the winter months.
It can also spread quickly in all kinds of domestic and commercial settings as it outgrows it’s boundaries and moves into surrounding areas.
Himalayan Balsam Removal
Himalayan Balsam removal methods can include :
Manual Removal -Removing the plant by hand.
Cutting & Strimming – Cutting as close to the ground as possible.
Herbicides – Weed Killers can be used on the infested area.
