    Himalayan Balsam

Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a non native species of plant believed to have been first brought to the UK in the nineteenth century from the Western Himalayas.

It is now common throughout Europe where it has become of some concern with the EU actually making it illegal to be imported or released intentionally in to the environment.

Identifiable by it’s distinct pink flower blooms and helmet shaped flowers and it’s dark green and reddish stems, Himalayan Balsam has been known to reach three metres in height when fully grown.

As well as being a problem for domestic gardens and commercial sites Himalayan Balsam also likes to populate densely along riverbanks as well as all kinds of waste and wooded areas, often in tightly clustered and easily identifiable clumps.

Similar to Japanese Knotweed it is very hardy and aggressive in it’s spread and along with it’s ability to thrive in most conditions this makes it quite a threat to local eco systems that it can outcompete.

    Himalayan Balsam Spread

Himalayan Balsams is a prolific spreader and it’s ability to spread so quickly stems mainly from it’s high seed production with estimates of it’s ability to produce between 800-2500 seeds from a single parent plant.

Couple this with it’s exploding seed dispersal from it’s pods when they ripen with the ability to shoot the seeds up to seven metres away and you can see how Himalayan Balsam spreads so aggressively.

Himalayan Balsam seeds are also buoyant and float which is the reason the plant often takes root on riverbanks. The seeds are dispersed into the river where they float downstream and take root further down the river where it also contributes to river erosion as it dies back during the winter months.

It can also spread easily in other settings such as gardens, woodlands and commercial sites as it’s exploding pods spread the seeds into surrounding properties where they can take root and spread again.

    Himalayan Balsam Removal

As with other invasive weeds methods of treating and removing Himalayan Balsam can include :

Manual Removal – Removing the plants and roots by hand.

Cutting & Strimming – Cutting with a strimmer or hand tool, cutting as close to the ground as possible.

Herbicide Treatments – Chemical weed killers can be used to treat the infestation.
