Himalayan Balsam in The UK

As the name suggests Himalayan Balsam ( Scientific name Impatiens Glandulifera from the Balsaminaceae family ) was first imported from the Himalayas and brought to these shores in the nineteenth century.

Classified as a non native, invasive species it was first introduced as a garden plant before escaping it’s surroundings and spreading into surrounding areas, namely riverbanks, waterways, wetlands and ditches.

Able to thrive in low light conditions and outcompete other native species it is recognisable by it’s purple, pink and white flowers often shaped like a bonnet or “Policeman’s Helmet” as it is sometimes known.

It has green and reddish stems and is the UK’s largest annual plant and flowers from July to October.

Himalayan Balsam grows rapidly and spreads easily due to it’s densely packed, exploding green hanging seed pods.

Himalayan Balsam is incredibly fast growing and spreads very quickly due to it’s hanging and explosive seed pods, each capable of producing up to 800 seeds and capable of distributing those seeds up to 7 metres away.

Often these seeds find their ways into adjacent rivers and waterways causing further dispersal as the seeds are carried downstream where they wash up and create new infestations.

This also contributes to riverbank erosion as the the plant dies over winter.
