Himalayan Balsam History and Identification
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a native of the Western Himalayas and is believed to be first introduced to the UK in 1839 as an attractive ornamental plant.
Now invasive throughout Europe it is easily identifiable by it’s distinctive purplish pink and white helmet shaped flowers and densely packed seed pods.
It can grow up to 3 metres in height and is an annual plant that usually flowers between June and October.
It is mostly commonly found growing in dense patches on riverbanks and areas of damp ground and can thrive in habitats in which many other species can not survive.
Himalayan Balsam Spread
Himalayan Balsam is a very aggressive spreader due mainly to it’s highly explosive seeds pods that are incredibly sensitive to any kind of contact when ripe, scattering the seeds up to 20 feet away from the plant.
Each plant is capable of producing up to 800 seeds and with Himalayan Balsam often found along riverbanks and waterways these seeds get scattered into the river and washed downstream to take root in other areas.
It can outcompete local plant species due to it’s ability to survive and thrive in very low light levels and has become such an issue throughout Europe that it is now an offence to plant or release Himalayan Balsam into the environment.
