Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a non native plant originally from the Western Himalayas but now considered a naturalised species that is a relative of the Busy Lizzie.
It is known to be found often along riverbanks and populating waste spaces and has become quite a significant weed problem with it actually being illegal to plant it in the wild.
It can reach well over head height and can grow and spread quickly and aggressively, invading surrounding spaces and gardens and outcompeting and smothering native vegetation.
Controlling Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan balsam has become much more of an issue in recent times as it has spread with each plant capable of producing up to 800 seeds and the plant able shoot it’s seeds up to 7 metres away.
The plant has often been spread by people sharing seeds and once those seeds find their way into a river they are transported further afield. This is why you will find Himalayan Balsam often on river banks and surrounding areas.
It is now an offence to plant or cause Himalayan Balsam to grow in the wild, or intentionally release the seeds into the environment.
It can also only be transported by a registered waste carrier to suitably permitted or exempt sites.
Himalayan Balsam Removal
As with all invasive weeds here are a number of different options for removing Himalayan Balsam depending on the size and spread of the infected area.
These can include :
Manual Removal – pulling up Himalayan Balsam by the hands can be quite effective due to it’s shallow root system.
Cutting and Strimming – the important thing to remember is to cut below the first node, close to the ground to stop re-growth.
Chemical Treatment/Herbicides – Only in a controlled and highly targeted manner.
