What Is Himalayan Balsam ?
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) also known as Policeman’s Helmet, Jumping Jack or Indian Balsam amongst other names, originates from Northern India and is first believed to be imported to the UK in the 1830’s.
It is considered an invasive, non-native species and is a relative of the Busy Lizzie.
Originally introduced as a garden plant it quickly spread out into surrounding countryside due it’s aggressive and quick spreading nature and ability to outcompete surrounding native vegetation.
It is most commonly found along riverbanks and waste grounds and can thrive in most damp areas, with it’s sturdy characteristics meaning it can flourish in many different habitats.
Now illegal to plant or cause to spread intentionally in the wild, it is identified by it’s purple-pink and sometimes white helmet shaped flowers hence the nickname Policeman’s Helmet.
The plant can grow up to 3 metres tall and is now the tallest annual plant in the UK and has also been called the UK’s most attractive invasive plant.
Himalayan Balsam Spread
Himalayan Balsam flowers are very attractive to bees and it produces exploding seedpods which can scatter seeds up to 7 metres away from the plant with each plant capable of producing up to 800 seeds each, these often land in surrounding rivers where they are carried downstream enabling further spread.
It’s ability to grow in low light levels, quickly and densely means it can outcompete native plants and upset local eco systems which means that containing it’s spread has become quite a priority for ecologists.
Himalayan Balsam Control & Removal
As Himalayan Balsam is a shallow rooted annual plant controlling and removing it is not as problematic as plants with strong and complex root structures.
Removal methods can include :
Manual Removal – Pulling up the plants by hand ensuring all the roots are removed.
Cutting and Strimming – This can be effective if the stems are cut below the lowest node.
Chemical Treatment – Herbicides can be applied to the infestation.
