Himalayan Balsam 

Himalayan Balsam ( Scientific name Impatiens Glandulifera from the Balsaminaceae family ) is a non native species of plant that was first brought to the UK in 1839 from it’s native Himalayas, giving it one of it’s nicknames “Kiss Me On The Mountain”.

It is a large attractive annual species of plant that was first introduced as an ornamental before it began to spread into the environment.

Identifiable by it’s good looking purplish / pink and sometimes white helmet shaped flowers which has given it another one of it’s nicknames “Policeman’s Helmet” , and it’s green and red tinged stems that can sometimes grow up to three metres in height Himalayan Balsam prefers moist soils and is often found alongside riverbanks and wetlands.

Himalayan Balsam grows rapidly and spreads easily due to it’s densely packed, exploding seed pods. It can out compete native species due to it’s tolerance of low light levels and has become such a problem that it has become a species of special concern under EU law which means it is an offence to plant Himalayan Balsam or cause it to grow in the wild.

Himalayan Balsam Spread 

As was mentioned before Himalayan Balsam’s incredible ability to spread and colonise new areas is due mainly to its exploding seed pods that can shoot the seeds up to seven metres from the original plant.

Each plant is capable of producing up to 800 seeds and these are often fired into adjacent rivers and waterways which carry the seeds further downstream where they will colonise other areas of river bank. This then also causes riverbank erosion as the plant dies back over the winter months.
