Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) was first brought to the UK in the 1830’s as a garden plant but quickly escaped it’s surroundings and became a widespread invasive species throughout the UK.
Now so prolific that it is illegal to cause it to spread in the environment it is a Species of Special Concern listed on the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
It is able to outcompete local native plants as it flourishes in damp, low light conditions and is often found alongside riverbanks, streamside areas and waste ground.
A tall growing annual that spreads by seed, it is easily identifiable by it’s pinkish purple flowers shaped in the shape of a helmet, densely packed seedpods and tall reddish green stems that can grow up to 3 metres in height.
Himalayan Balsam Spread
A rapid and aggressive spreader Himalayan Balsam ability to populate new areas is mainly due to it’s ability to produce and disperse it’s seeds.
Each plant is capable of producing up to 800 seeds which can be scattered up to 7 metres away from the parent plant by it’s densely packed and highly explosive seed pods.
As the plant is often found in infestations along riverbanks and waterways these seeds get shot into the watercourses where they can spread far and wide, washing up further downstream and creating new infestations which die back over the winter contributing to river erosion.
