Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a non native plant that was first introduced to the UK by the Victorians as an ornamental.

A striking looking plant identifiable by it’s hood shaped flowers that come in different shades of pink, purple and white and also known as Policeman’s Helmet, Bobby Tops and Copper Tops among other names.

It’s reddish tinged stems can grow over two metres in height and you will often find it growing densely along riverbanks as well as waste and woodland areas.

The problem when it enters a domestic setting such as a garden is it’s ability to dominate and overtake existing plants as it can grow in very low light levels and can survive in many habitats and conditions.
