Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a non native plant that was first introduced to the UK by the Victorians as an ornamental.
A striking looking plant identifiable by it’s hood shaped flowers that come in different shades of pink, purple and white and also known as Policeman’s Helmet, Bobby Tops and Copper Tops among other names.
It’s reddish tinged stems can grow over two metres in height and you will often find it growing densely along riverbanks as well as waste and woodland areas.
The problem when it enters a domestic setting such as a garden is it’s ability to dominate and overtake existing plants as it can grow in very low light levels and can survive in many habitats and conditions.
Controlling Himalayan Balsam
As it has continued to spread throughout the UK and Europe Himalayan Balsam has become a much greater problem for local environments and eco-systems. So much so that it is now illegal to transport the plant or even the seeds in the UK.
Himalayan Balsam is incredibly resilient and quick spreading, often growing in strong dense patches and producing exploding pods of seeds, often over 800 from each pod that can explode and scatter seeds up to 7 metres away and as Himalayan Balsam often populates on riverbanks these then get carried downstream where they take root and start new infestations.
Himalayan Balsam Removal
Methods for removing Himalayan Balsam include :
Manual Removal – Pulling or digging the plant out by it’s shallow roots, best done before it flowers usually in June.
Strimming / Cutting – Cutting as close to the ground as possible, below the first node of the plant.
Chemical Treatment / Herbicides – Being careful to ensure no spread to surrounding plants.
