Identifying Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) is a large annual species of plant that as the name would imply, is native to the Himalayas.
First introduced to the UK in the 1800’s it is common throughout Europe and is identifiable by it’s distinct purplish / pink helmet shaped flowers ( which have given it one of it’s nicknames “Policeman’s Helmet” ) .
It has green and red tinged stems that can grow up to two metres tall and is often found growing in dense clumps along riverbanks, wetlands and wooded areas as well as domestic gardens.
Himalayan Balsam is another incredibly sturdy and aggressively spreading species that can overtake local plant species due to it’s ability to thrive in low-light conditions and it has now become such an issue that it is currently illegal to plant or cause it to grow in the wild.
Himalayan Balsam Spread & Control
Since 2017, Himalayan Balsam has been included on the EU list of Invasive Alien Species of Union concern. What this means is that legally Himalayan Balsam cannot be imported, cultivated or released intentionally into the environment throughout the whole of the European Union.
Himalayan Balsam is a very prolific and quick spreading species with each plant able to produce up to 800 seeds from explosive pods that burst when ripe showering the seeds up to 7 metres away often into the adjacent river that carry the seeds downstream where they spread and take root along the riverbank where it contributes to riverbank erosion as it dies back over the winter.
It can also easily outgrow it’s boundaries in domestic settings, encroaching into neighbouring gardens and surrounding areas.
Treating & Removing Himalayan Balsam
The main methods of treating and removing Himalayan Balsam can include :
Removing Balsam Manually -Pulling up the plants and roots by hand before they flower and set seed.
Cutting & Strimming – Cutting below the first node as close to the soil as possible.
Chemical Treatments – A weed killer such as Glyphosate can be used.
