Himalayan Balsam 

Himalayan Balsam ( Impatiens Glandulifera ) was first introduced to the UK in the 1800’s as an attractive garden planet.

Imported from the Himalayan Mountains it is now common throughout Europe where it has escaped it’s original garden setting and has now become such an invasive problem that it is illegal to plant or import it.

Himalayan Balsam likes to populate along riverbanks and damp wetland areas where it can survive in low light conditions and outcompete native species.

Himalayan Balsam spreads from it’s highly explosive seed pods that can open with the slightest touch when ripe, scattering seeds up to seven metres from the host plant.

With each plant capable of producing over 800 seeds it can easily escape it’s initial surrounding and spread into the local environment, especially as Himalayan Balsam is often found alongside riverbanks where the seeds can get washed further downstream to establish more densely packed infestations.

This also contributes to riverbank erosion as it dies back in the autumn / winter leaving the riverbank bare and vulnerable.
